The Alex Buck Junior Ambassador Scholarship Fund

Alex Buck was a two-time Junior Ambassador - to Fukui, Japan, in 2000; and to Morelia, Mexico, in 2002 - who passed away December 25th, 2006, just prior to his twentieth birthday.  He was a graduate of Troy High School and attended Pomona College.  While at Troy, he was a member of the band and the Science Olympiad Team.  His interests were many and he was particularly fond of travel and photography.  His "Fullerton Observed" photo series was featured in the Observer newspaper for several years.

Alex fought cancer for two and a half years, refusing to let it deter him from leading a normal life.  He began college while undergoing extensive medical treatment, and became a research assistant at the hospital during the summer.

Alex exemplified the finest attributes of our Junior Ambassador program.  Before he passed away, he told us he had learned that in spite of economic and cultural differences, human values are universal.  He hoped that he would help make the world a better place for all people.  We will never know how he might have changed the world; we regret that he was not granted more time to help bring about the changes he so earnestly supported

Alex’s family has indicated that the gift he would have most appreciated would be to do things for others and help bring about peace on earth.  The spirit of the Junior Ambassador program is to instill these principles in its participants.  The Fullerton Sister City Association is proud that Alex’s parents have allowed us to name our Scholarship program in his memory.
